SMD Lab

Hardware is hard

It should have gone much faster…

Unfortunately, there has been a major setback in my project. The MAT16X8 should have been finished long ago. The design was made even more robust by adding an extra protective layer to the outer sides. 10 new prototypes were made and tested. Everything looked good, all running smoothly.

The prototypes were then sent to the test laboratory to ensure the electromagnetic compatibility in order to be certified for CE and FCC. This is a mandatory step to ensure they meet the necessary standards for sale. Contrary to expectations and despite previous tests, they did not pass all the tests in the laboratory.

This was a major setback for me. I seriously considered abandoning the project. I am now tasked with completing another round of development. This includes a new PCB layout, significantly extended precompliance tests, and the production of new prototypes. This approach is costly in terms of both time and money.

I have decided not to give up. I will do everything I can to make the MAT16X8 available as soon as possible. I’m going to ask for a little more patience.

I’m also making further improvements. A metal housing is being planned as an optional feature. It will also be possible to install different firmware versions via USB to enable different configurations of the interface. These include making the inputs (also partially) directly compatible for Eurorack levels (max +/- 5V) by ‘hacking’ the internal gains and deactivating the software-controlled volume control (e.g. with the buttons on the iPad). This will be useful for safe live operation. Compatibility with the planned expansion board will be further improved. So, all the efforts are not just for the compliance tests.

I am still absolutely convinced that the MAT16X8 will be an excellent product. The very positive feedback from everyone who already knows it and has been able to test some of the prototypes keeps me going.

We will also be on site again at Superbooth 25 and look forward to your visit and the opportunity to demonstrate the MAT16X8’s wide range of applications live.

See you there.
